Onus to reduce tension on Pakistan: Russia

Russia on Tuesday asked Pakistan to understand the cause of present Indo-Pak tensions and take steps to prevent terrorist activities against its neighbour.

"We expect that the Pakistani side would better understand our vision of the root causes of the current crisis in South Asia and the only way to defuse it is through preventing terrorist activities," foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said commenting on Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Anatoly Safonov's ongoing Islamabad visit.

Yakovenko told ITAR-TASS news agency that the visit was planned in advance to discuss issues related to combating terrorism, extremism and illegal drug trafficking.

"However, Moscow attaches special political importance to this visit in view of a sharp aggravation of situation in India-Pakistan relations," Yakovenko said.
