Fernandes dismisses immediate threat of war

Union Defence Minister George Fernandes on Friday dismissed the immediate threat of war with Pakistan, describing the situation as 'stable', according to an agency report.

"I don't think one needs to worry just now as to what is likely to happen," Fernandes was quoted as saying after private talks with US Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz in Singapore.

Fernandes is in Singapore to attend a regional security conference.

Wolfowitz had earlier said that a war between India and Pakistan 'has the potential for catastrophic consequences that would do untold damage to India, to Pakistan, to the whole world'.
