Siege of temples end, 12 killed

The siege of temples ended in Jammu on Sunday midnight after security forces killed two heavily armed Lashkar-e-Toyiba militants in the historic Raghunath temple and the nearby Shiv temple.

One militant was killed in the Raghunath temple while the second was killed in the smaller Shiv temple, 300 meters from the Raghunath temple, after a gun battle lasting for three hours.

The militant attack left at least 12 people dead, including the two militants, four women and two security men.

Police said 53 persons were injured and are undergoing treatment in the SMGS hospital. The condition of some is stated to be critical.

Security forces later sanitised both places.

Unconfirmed reports said two more militants, who were involved in the attack, may have escaped.

Meanwhile tension gripped the city following the attack, as authorities clamped curfew till Monday evening and deployed police and paramilitary forces.

Director General of Police A K Suri said the militants belonged to a suicide squad of the Pakistan-based militant outfit -- Lashkar-e-Toyiba.
