Ahead of the crucial dharam sansad (religious gathering) on Saturday, BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday appealed to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to understand the sensitivity of the Ayodhya issue and create conditions for a meaningful solution to the problem.

"I am optimistic that VHP will not do anything which will complicate the problem," Naidu told newsmen in Kolkata while on his way to Nagaland for campaigning.

Reiterating that the Ayodhya tangle could be resolved either through a negotiated settlement or through a court verdict, he said the issue now was before the court and the government has to uphold the rule of law.

The BJP president, however, made it clear that his party was in favour of constructing a magnificent temple at the birthplace of Lord Ram.

"Historically it is clear that there was a temple of Lord Ram. We hope that truth will prevail," he said.

Naidu claimed that BJP never used the Ram janambhoomi issue for political gain and said that it was the Congress government which had allowed shilanyas at Ayodhya.
