A leading light of the Ram temple movement Mahant Paramhans Ramchandra Das on Thursday suffered a massive heart attack in Ayodhya and was admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute Hospital in Lucknow.

He has been lodged in the intensive care unit of the SGPGI, source said.

Paramhans, in his 90s, was initially admitted to a nursing home in Ayodhya after the attack but was later flown to Lucknow by a Uttar Pradesh government plane.

Doctors at the SGPGI described his condition as 'stable but not out of danger'.

Paramhans, the president of the Ramjanambhoomi Nyas (trust), suffered the heart attack around 0730 IST at his Digambari Akhara in Ayodhya, VHP senior vice-president Giriraj Kishore told PTI in Delhi.

State Bharatiya Janata Party president Vinay Katiyar and several Vishwa Hindu Parishad top brass and senior BJP ministers visited the hospital.

State Bharatiya Janata Party president Vinay Katiyar and Minister of State for Revenue Ghanshyam Shukla accompanied the mahant to Lucknow, they said.

Earlier, there were fears that the mahant's poor health would not permit his shifting to Lucknow.
