Bowing to pressure from opposition parties, Uttaranchal Chief Minister N D Tiwari on Wednesday night announced the suspension of three police constables accused of teasing a local woman in Hardwar.

The incident had triggered widespread violence on Wednesday forcing police to open fire resulting in the death of one person and injuries to several others.

"We have suspended all three cops who misbehaved with a woman on Tuesday night in Hardwar," Tiwari told reporters in Dehradun.

He however, refused to take action against other administration and police officials stating that a judicial enquiry commission would look into all aspects related to the violence.

Tiwari also announced a compensation of Rs 250,000 to the next of the kin of Kali, who was killed in police firing.

All those injured in the firing, including journalists, would get compensation of Rs 50,000 each, he said.
