The dreaded Japanese Encephalitis continued to take its toll in eastern Uttar Pradesh claiming 15 more lives on Thursday, taking the number of deaths reported so far to 681.
As many as 15 deaths occurred due to encephalitis in the past 24 hours in the region, a health department official said. Additional Health Director D P Mishra said a total of 2745 patients are admitted at BRD medical college hospital in Gorakhpur and 7 district hospitals of Gorakhpur and Basti divisions.

He said Kushinagar remained worst affected as out of 662 patients 133 died while in Gorakhpur 138 died out of 558. Apart from adjacent districts, the patients from Nepal, Bihar, Gonda, Balrampur and Bahraich have been admitted at various hospitals. Meanwhile, manual fogging is being undertaken in 20 districts of Uttar Pradesh, worst affected by the disease.
