In the first signs of peace returning to trouble-torn Nandigram, an all-party meeting was held in Nandigram on Tuesday to resolve the issue of repairing roads which were dug up by protesters opposing the state government's move to acquire farm land for industries.
The meeting came in the wake of a successful discussion between Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata.
The meeting, convened by East Midnapore District Magistrate Anup Agarwal, was attended by all political parties including those belonging to the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee, an union of opposition parties leading the anti-land acquisition movement.
Earlier, BUPC had boycotted the all-party meetings at the local level.
Later, talking to reporters, the DM said that it was decided that work for restoration of roads would be taken up from Wednesday.
However, Agarwal said it would be decided by the block development officer in consultation with political parties when road repair work and pending development work would start at Sonachura and Kalicharanpur.
Most of the roads leading to villages in Nandigram were dug up to prevent the entry of security forces after seven people were killed in police firing on January 7.
