JD to focus on Bihar, Karnataka, Orissa
The Janata Dal's political affairs committee today decided to concentrate on Bihar, Karnataka and Orissa in the coming general election while ruling out any truck with the Congress in tune with the United Front's political plank.
The PAC, which met for the first time after the dissolution
of the Lok Sabha, felt the thrust of the campaign should be on
'stability with change'.
In Bihar, JD secretary general Bapu Kaldate said, his party would fight the breakaway Rashtriya
Janata Dal headed by former chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav.
Kaldate said the PAC decided to seek the opinions of state units on the proposal to bring back former prime minister
Chandra Shekhar, former chief ministers Ramakrishna Hegde and
Om Prakash Chautala into the party.
Union Human Resources Minister S R Bommai, who mooted the proposal at Bangalore yesterday, raised the issue at the PAC meeting.
Those who attended the PAC meeting included Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, his predecessor H D Deve Gowda, party president Sharad Yadav and Union Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy.
On the possibility of roping in former chief minister S Bangarappa's party in Karnataka into the UF fold, Kaldate said things
have not reached that stage. However, state units would be
consulted on any alliance with regional parties.
