HP assembly, LS polls may be held simultaneouslyThe Election Commission has agreed to consider requests for simultaneous assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Himachal Pradesh and a Lok Sabha election in Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country. The Commission has received representations to this effect from Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virabhadra Singh and his Jammu and Kashmir counterpart Dr Farooq Abdullah. Assembly elections are due later next year in Himachal Pradesh. The Commission is yet to decide whether a Lok Sabha election for six seats in Jammu and Kashmir could be held with the rest of the country as these areas often remained snow-bound during this time. Singh and Dr Abdullah separately met Chief Election Commissioner Dr M S Gill in Delhi today and pleaded their cases with him. |
