Six-day cut in campaign period

The Election Commission has reduced the campaigning period for the forthcoming Lok Sabha election by six days. Now, instead of 20 days after the last date for withdrawing nominations, political parties will have only 14.

This was announced by the Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer K A Mathew in Madras, who quoted an Election Commission directive.

Mathew said the EC has convened a meeting of chief electoral officers on January 7. The poll schedule is expected to be announced after the meeting.

Stating that preparations for the election were in full swing, he said the state was likely to have a two-day poll though it was ready to finish it in one day if the need arose. The election would cost the exchequer Rs 350 million. He added that the state had requested the EC an advance of Rs 120 million.
