A section of bank employees on Monday threatened to go on a two-day strike from August 6 if the Indian Banks Association did not resume negotiations on its long-pending demands regarding wage revision and compassionate appointment.

Unions under the banner of the United Forum of Bank Unions said that IBA had offered a wage increase of 17.5 per cent to the total workforce on June 9 in response to its demand for 20 per cent-plus.

However, on June 17, IBA backtracked on the offer "at the instance of government," the UFBU said in a statement in Mumbai.

UFBU's efforts to persuade IBA Chairman M V Nair through a deputation on July 14 did not yield any result, it said.

Besides wage revision and compassionate appointment, the UFBU is also demanding provision of one more option for pension.

The UFBU represents five workmen unions and four officers' organisations.
