Sensex snaps three-day losing streak

The BullThe Sensex on Tuesday opened flat at 15,000 and slipped to a low of 14,864 within minutes of the opening bell. The index languished in the red as concerns grew following the Finance Minister's statement that 161 districts are prone to be hit by drought due to lack of rains.

However, positive sentiments about the country's GDP growth helped the index to rebound and touch a high of 15,218 - up 354 points from the day's low.The markets witnessed some volatility before close of the day, wherein both the major indices dipped into red only to bounce back into green.

The Sensex finally ended at 15,075 -- up 65 points.

The Nifty crossed the 4,500 mark and touched a high of 4,511. The NSE index finally ended at 4,471 -- up 34 points.

Monday's loser, BSE auto index led the list of gainers today. The index rebounded after a four-day loosing streak and added 3% to 5,370. The realty and metal indices were up 2% each at 3,693 and 12,306, respectively.

The market breadth was marginally positive. Out of 2,733 stocks traded 1,356 advanced while 1,282 declined.

INDEX MOVERS...

Tata Motors rallied 7% to Rs 428. Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki gained 3.5% each at Rs 785 and Rs 1,291 respectively.

Hindalco added 3.3% to Rs 105. Bharti Airtel and Tata Power advanced 2% each to Rs 383 and Rs 1,274, respectively.

Tata Steel, Sun Pharma, Hindustan Unilever, SBI and ACC were up around 1% each.

Among the NIfty stocks, HCL Technologies, Jindal Steel, Ranbaxy and Gail India added 4-6% each.

...AND SHAKERS

Jaiprakash Associates slipped 2.5% to Rs 209.

HDFC and NTPC dropped 1% each to Rs 2,303 and Rs 209, respectively.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS...

Reliance topped the combined value chart throught the day with a turnover of Rs 831.11 crore, followed by ICICI Bank (Rs 681.19 crore), Jaiprakash Associates (Rs 627.79 crore), Tata Motors (Rs 612.13 crore) and Tata Steel (Rs 578.88 crore).

The combined volume chart was led by Unitech with trades of over 64.16 million shares, followed by Suzlon (56.78 million), Ispat Industries (47.3 million), GVK Power & Infastructure (35.28 million) and IFCI (35.18 million).
