Price rise: BJP threatens countrywide stir

August 17, 2009 16:57 IST

A man selling pulsesBharatiya Janata Party on Monday warned the Centre that if it failed to contain price rise in the next three months, it would launch a nation-wide agitation.

"Today's protest is only symbolic. If the government fails to contain the price rise within the next three months, BJP workers across the country would fill up all the jails. . . we would launch a nation-wide agitation," BJP President Rajnath Singh said while addressing a sit-in organised by the state unit of BJP in New Delhi to protest price rise.

He said often BJP-ruled states are blamed for taking no action against hoarders. "If that is the case, then how come prices of essential commodities in Delhi are increasing," he quipped.

Accusing the Centre of escaping responsibility, Singh said the United Progressive Alliance government lacked a clear vision and policy to deal with the situation.

He said the prevailing fiscal deficit would force the government to circulate more currency in the economy. "This would result in further inflation," he added.

Referring to high input cost involved in housing sector, he said the common man would not be able to have a house in the prevailing situation.

Echoing similar sentiments, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said the government was escaping its responsibility in containing price rise in the name of global recession.
