About 20 million mobile phones without International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) will be non-functional from Tuesday (December 1) as the government's deadline to ban mobile handsets without the unique identification number came to an end on Monday.

IMEI number is a 15-digit unique number which enable the service providers in tracking or blocking your mobile phone if it is lost.

The operator can also track the handset user by using Global Positioning System. The issue was raised as security agencies were not able to trace mobile handsets after terrorists attack.Meanwhile, Cellular Operators Association of India has sought for a two-month extension to bring about the change but the Department of Telecommunications has not said anything about the same.

"We have asked for a two-month extension from DoT for complying with the normsÂ…About 17-20 million mobile handsets would become ineffective if the deadline of November 30 remains," COAI officiating director general T R Dua said.

He added the association will continue to take up the matter for extension, even after the deadline ends, till a decision is reached.

DoT had asked all mobile operators to comply with national security norms, by not carrying calls from mobile handsets without IMEI number, latest by November 30.

The department has already extended the deadline a couple of times. COAI had in May developed a software in association with mobile standard alliance of India to provide IMEI number to mobile handsets without it.
