Bank employees begin nationwide strike

December 16, 2009 11:02 IST

Normal banking operations were affected on Wednesday as the Left-leaning bank employees went on a one-day nation-wide strike to protest the proposed merger of the State Bank of Indore with its parent SBI.

Employees under the banner of the All India Bank Employees' Association and the All India Bank Officers' Association are on strike, AIBEA general secretary C H Venkatachalam told PTI.

Venkatachalam said there should be no consolidation in the public sector banks in the name of creating a larger bank.

Many public and private sector banks have already informed customers that the normal functioning at bank's branches may get affected in view of the strike call.

PSU banks control about 70 per cent of the banking operations in the country.
