To improve the crime fighting capabilities of police, the Centre has decided to link 14,000 police stations in the country with modern equipment and latest technology.

The crime and criminal tracking network and systems project aims at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of policing at police station level through adoption of principles of e-governance.

"Under the project, about 14,000 police stations and 6,000 other police offices at various levels would be connected through this computer network," Union minister of state for home affairs Ajay Maken told Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The estimated cost of this project is Rs 2,000 crore (Rs 20 billion) during the 11th Five Year Plan.

The project aims at creation of a nationwide networked infrastructure for evolution of IT-enabled state-of-the-art tracking system around 'investigation of crime and detection of criminals' in the real time.

The police stations are likely to be connected by the end of 2010-2011, Maken said.
