Maharashtra mulls law on jobs for locals

June 12, 2009 16:56 IST
The Maharashtra government is considering converting an ordinance on giving priority to locals in jobs into an Act, the state Legislative Council was informed on Friday.

"The government would consider converting the ordinance into a legislation for giving priority to locals in industry," Minister of State for Urban Development Hasan Mushrif informed the House.

The minister's statement came after opposition members vociferously demanded a legislation to guarantee jobs to locals. Shiv Sena MLC Arvid Sawant alleged that the state government had failed to implement the ordinance and hence it should be converted into an Act.

Echoing the sentiment, another Sena leader Diwakar Raote accused the government of "not giving any protection" to locals. In fact, locals have been ruined by the government, he alleged. Unsatisfied with the minister's answer on the issue, Sena-BJP members walked out of the House.
