Information technology czar Azim Premji foresaw on Friday emergence of a two-party system in the country, saying the recent Lok Sabha polls verdict was an indication to that effect.

Addressing the Confederation of Indian Industry-organised fifth India Innovation Summit 2009 in Bangalore, he said the results of the recent Parliamentary elections suggested that Indian voter wants a two-party system.

Premji did not name any political party but was apparently referring to the outcome in which Congress alone bagged 206 seats and some regional parties were marginalised.

He said if the United Progressive Alliance government indeed delivers on its 100-day commitment, results of the next Lok Sabha elections five years later would be 'completely different' and there would be a two-party system in place.

Earlier, Premji also said: "I think we have learnt the technology of managing alliances. . .coalition governments."

He said coalition governments in India have been reasonably successful. Though one can criticise coalition governments of 'inconsistencies' because of coalition compulsions, they indeed have delivered but may not be up to the expectations.

Premji said Indian economy is getting as open as any global economy, and now the government which has a 'little more' freedom, is expected to push liberalisation more aggressively than it has done in the past, leading to more competition being generated.
