Railways have registered over 3 per cent growth in revenue earnings despite recession in the first two months of the current financial year as passenger bookings also showed an increase of 5 per cent.
During April and May, the PSU behemoth earned Rs 13,708.88 crore (Rs 137.088 billion) as against Rs 13,265.63 crore (Rs 132.656 billion) which it earned during the same period last year, thus registering an increase of 3.34 per cent.
Out of the total earnings, the total goods earnings went up from Rs 9126.99 crore (Rs 91.269 billion) to Rs 9340.39 crore (Rs 93.403 billion) between April and May, an increase of 2.34 per cent, said a release issued by the Railways.
Similarly, the total passenger revenue earnings during the period were Rs 3,831.00 crore (Rs 38.31 billion) compared to Rs 3,636.57 crore (Rs 36.365 billion) during the same period last year, registering an increase of 5.35 per cent, the release said.
The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs 396.36 crore (Rs 3.963 billion) during the period as compared to Rs 357.85 crore (Rs 3.578 billion) during the same period last year, registering an increase of 10.76 per cent.
The total approximate number of passengers booked between April and May 2009 were 1,203.71 million compared to 11,55.34 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 4.19 per cent.
