The government asked airlines on Monday to inform in advance if they were unable to use the flying slots allocated to them, so that these could be transferred to other carriers.

The directive from the civil aviation ministry came after the airlines together failed to utilise over 13 per cent of the slots allocated to them last year, official sources said.

The domestic carriers have already filed their summer schedules which shows a marginal increase in the number of flights each week -- from 11,048 last year to 11,116 this year.

The summer schedule would be effective from March 29.

"Any airline which is unable to utilise all the slots should indicate well in time so that these slots could be allocated to other carriers," official sources said after a meeting between top ministry officials and representatives of all airlines here.

For the winter season starting October, the ministry asked them to file two separate schedules, including one for the fog period as identified by the meteorological department.

The airlines were also directed to train their pilots on Category-III flight operations during the foggy season and make their aircraft compliant for such operations by installing the necessary equipment on aircraft.

At the meeting, it was also decided to set up control centres at each airport, comprising DGCA, airport operators and airline officials, to review the on-time performance of airlines on a daily basis.
