Sensex ends up 140 points; Jaiprakash surges 7%

The Sensex opened 65 points higher at 9,633. The index, however, could not hold gains and slipped into the negative zone to touch low of 9,547.

Aggressive buying in capital goods, realty and health care stocks saw the index touch a high of 9,826 in the the last trading trading session.

The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 140 points at 9,708.

The NSE Nifty ended at 3021, up 43 points.

The market breadth was positive - out of 2,542 stocks traded, 1,551 advanced, 903 declined and 88 were unchanged on Wednesday.

INDEX GAINERS...

Jaiprakash Associates zoomed 7.3% to Rs 84, while Tata Steel soared 5% to Rs 206. Tata Motors and Ranbaxy surged 4.6% each to Rs 180 and Rs 166, respectively.

SBI was up 4.4% to Rs 1,066, and Reliance Communications gained 4% to Rs 175.

Mahindra & Mahindra moved up 3.5% to Rs 383. Hindalco advanced 3.4% to Rs 52.

Larsen & Toubro, TCS and ITC were up 3.3% each at Rs 673, Rs 540 and Rs 185, respectively.

Grasim and Sun Pharma added 2.8% each to Rs 1,577 and Rs 1,112, respectively.

Bharti Airtel, Maruti and Reliance Infrastructure rallied 2.6% each to Rs 626, Rs 775 and Rs 515, respectively. HDFC Bank gained 2.4% to Rs 968.

ACC, BHEL and Infosys were up 2% each.

...AND THE SHAKERS

HDFC plunged 2.7% to Rs 1,411. NTPC slipped 1.8% to Rs 180.

ICICI Bank dropped 1.6% to Rs 333. Hindustan Unilever and ONGC were the other major losers today.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

ICICI Bank topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 351.08 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 254.60 crore), SBI (Rs 169.61 crore), Reliance Infrastructure (Rs 162.78 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs 146.50 crore).

Unitech led the volume chart with trades of around 1.56 crore shares followed by GVK Power & Infrastructure (1.40 crore), Cals Refineries (1.21 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (1.14 crore) and ICICI Bank (1.06 crore).
