A local court on Monday granted three days police remand to two persons who allegedly tried to extort Rs 50 lakh from Reliance Industries for withdrawing their petition filed in Bombay High Court opposing company's merger with group firm Reliance Petroleum.

Metropolitan Magistrate S M Singhal had reserved the order on May 22 on a plea to extend the police remand of Jayendra Shah and his associate Dilip Motwani by city Crime Branch and had sent the duo to judicial custody.

The Court sent Shah and Motwani to three days police custody till May 28, against seven days demanded by the city Crime Branch. The duo have already been in police custody for two days following their arrest on May 19.

According to public prosecutor Sudhir Bhrambhatt, the duo were trying to obstruct a merger which is likely to benefit the people and in a way were hampering progress of the company working in larger interest of the country.

Also it has been alleged that Shah and Motwani had called up RIL officials and demanded Rs 50 lakh to withdraw their petition filed in the Bombay High Court opposing the RIL-RPL merger.

However, Shah and Motwani's lawyers argued that it was a conspiracy against their clients. RIL officials had contacted them first to settle the matter.
