India adds 3.55 cr wireless subscribers in Apr-June

wireless telephoneIndia added a whopping 3.55 crore (35.5 million) wireless telephone users during the quarter ended on June 30 this year taking the wireless subscriber base to 42.72 crore (427.2 million).

The wireless user base grew by 9.06 per cent during the April-June quarter of this year to 42.72 crore (427.2 million) from 39.17 crore (391.7 million) in the preceding quarter, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said.

The total telecom subscriber base (wireline and wireless) touched 46.48 crore (464.8 million) for the quarter ended June this year from 42.97 crore (429.7 million) in the quarter ended March, registering an increase of 8.17 per cent.

The tele-density (number of telephones per 100 people) for the quarter ended June reached 39.86 as compared to 36.98 in the previous one, Trai said.

However, the all-India blended average revenue per user per month for the GSM segment (full mobility) decreased by 10 per cent to Rs 185 in June from Rs 205 in March, while the ARPU for the CDMA segment during the same period dipped 7.2 per cent to Rs 92 from Rs 99.

Subscriber base of wireline service has declined to 3.75 crore (37.5 million) at the end of June, taking the wireline tele-density to 3.22.

During the April-June quarter, subscription in urban areas increased to 32.85 crore (328.5 million), while rural subscription grew to 13.62 crore (136.2 million), taking the tele-density in these areas to 16.61. The urban tele-density stood at 95.05.

The share of rural subscribers increased to 29.3 per cent in total subscription, Trai said.

The total Internet subscriber base reached 1.40 crore (14 million) for the April-June quarter from 1.35 crore (13.5 million) in the previous quarter, registering an increase of about 3.8 per cent.

Share of Broadband subscription in total Internet subscription increased to 47 per cent in April-June from 46 per cent in January-March, it said.
