Sensex ends above 16K

The Sensex continued to gain on the back of sustained buying. It finally closed the day up 327 points at 16,016.32, a gain of 2.09% over Friday's close. NSE Nifty gained 103 points at 4,782.90, up 2.19%.

Among the sectoral indices, realty and metal indices lead the rally.

Tata Motors had zoomed 8.5%. Jaipraksh Associates and Reliance Communications both soared 5.5% each.

While Sterlite surged over 5%, DLF and ICICI Bank rallied over 4%.

The market breadth is extremely positive - out of 2,858 stocks, 2,262 have advanced, while 559 have declined.

The Asian markets, too, ended in the positive terrain today.

The Hang Seng settled at a three-week closing high at 20,629, up 310 points following the recent show of support for Chinese markets from Beijing. Also US data reflecting fewer job cuts in the month of August buoyed market sentiment.

The Nikkei gained 133 points to close at 10,320 as exporters such as Canon rose, with investors focusing on the bright side of mixed US jobs data and as the yen retreated against the dollar.

The Sanghai Composite moved up 19 points to settle at 2,881.

The Taiwan Weighted added 71 points to 7,224.

The Straits Times was marginally up  6 points to 2,628.

The Seoul Composite ended flat.
