State-run utility NTPC plans to more than double its power generation capacity by 2017 from the current 30,000 MW, diversifying further into renewable and nuclear energy.
"The company is poised to have 75,000 MW generation capacity with diverse fuel mix by the year 2017," NTPC CMD R S Sharma said at the company's Annual General Meeting on Thursday.
Hydro, nuclear and renewable energy sources would contribute 12,000 MW of the targetted capacity addition.
NTPC has set a target of setting up hydro power capacity of 9,000 MW, nuclear power capacity of 2000 MW, renewable energy of 1,000, MW by 2017, Sharma said.
The company has set a capital expenditure target of Rs 17,700 crore (Rs 177 billion) during the current financial year (2009-10).
Sharma said the company is working on its six captive coal mines with a production target of 12 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2012 and 47 MTPA by 2017.
It is also scouting for opportunities to acquire coal mines abroad for securing the fuel supply, especially in Indonesia, Mozambique and South Africa, he added.
