February 23, 2010 11:24 IST

Toyota Kirloskar Motors has taken another step in the direction of making its vehicles environment friendly by launching the CNG variant of its popular sedan model Toyota Corolla.

According to a company spokesperson, "Toyota is an environment conscious company committed to the cause of nurturing and protecting nature in its myriad forms. With CNG having established itself as an eco-friendly, reliable and economic fuel, TKM is pleased to announce CNG-powered Corolla Altis in India."

The model would initially be available at dealerships in Mumbai, Delhi and NCR. Toyota had showcased the CNG model of Corolla at the Delhi Auto Expo 2010 and is finally bringing it to the customers.

CNG Toyota Corolla Altis has a 5-speed manual VVT-i, 4cylinder, 16-valve, 1.8-litre petrol engine capable of generating 132 bhp and 17.3kgm of torque. This CNG model would come equipped with the latest Sequential Injection System coupled with its own ECU. These help in delivering good performance and high mileage.

Toyota would fit the CNG kits in the car at the dealerships itself. So, there would be no changes at all in the exterior and interior design of Corolla.

However, the CNG cylinder would eat up about one-fourth space of the 475 liter boot space of Corolla. Also Toyota has priced the CNG models Rs 80,000 more than the petrol model.
