Union Minister of State for Communication Sachin Pilot on Thursday said that efforts are on to increase the teledensity in the country to 40 per cent by 2014.
"Teledensity which was about two percent in 1995 is on a rise and efforts are being made by BSNL to make it 40 percent by 2014," Pilot said.
He said BSNL would be expanding its telephone network and all villages having a minimum population of 200 would be provided with broadband facilities.
Responding to poor connectivity of its mobile service, Pilot said BSNL has a social commitment and its motive does not lie in only earning revenues like private players. "Private players are confined to urban areas while BSNL has reached far flung areas to serve the customers," he said.
For better connectivity, Pilot said 150 BSNL towers would be set up by the end of this financial year while another 150 would come up in next fiscal year including urban and rural areas.
