Greenpeace activistsIn a first-of-its-kind initiative to develop tourism as well as reduce its carbon footprint, Abu Dhabi will launch zero-emission, all-electric buses on Sir Bani Yas Island, making it the first such transport system in the world.

The Emirate's Tourism Development & Investment Company has ordered two such vehicles, said to be the world's first carbon-neutral buses, which would be delivered soon.

The buses will run on the 87-sq km Sir Bani Yas island, making it the 'first destination in the world to have a public transportation system run purely on all-electric buses,' the company's master developer said.

The announcement was made at the World Future Energy Summit on renewable energy currently going on here. World leaders, meanwhile, raised an alarm about global warming, asking nations to increase the use of clean energy sources like solar and wind power.

The zero-emission buses are manufactured in US specially to suit the Middle East's climate.

They are the 'perfect transport solution for Sir Ban Yas, namely for their low noise, low vibration, low maintenance costs and zero carbon emissions,' TDIC said.

"Bringing the world's first zero-emission buses to Sir Ban Yas Island is a perfect example of what an environmentally conscious tourism industry should be like," said TDIC CEO Lee Tabler.
