Strike graphicUttar Pradesh government employees demanding pay structure and allowance equivalent to central government employees intensified their agitation by giving a call for an indefinite strike from Friday in protest against the police action on them while holding a demonstration in Lucknow.

"To protest against the yesterday's incident where employees were brutally assaulted by police during their peaceful agitation, the unions have decided to observe an indefinite strike," a trade union leader Shashi Mishra said.

The strike will be observed in all government departments, local bodies, hospitals, including OPDs and schools and colleges, he said, adding emergency services have also been included in the strike.

"We demand action against officers responsible for police action on employees," Mishra said.

Over 24 people were injured in the clash between the agitating employees and police. The protestors indulged in brick batting and damaged several vehicles following which police baton-charged them and lobbed tear gas shells.

Twelve people, including some leaders, were also arrested last night in this connection. A government spokesman said, "Such an act is in gross violation of the service rules and the strike is illegal. Despite having limited resources the government implemented recommendations of the sixth pay commission, which created an additional burden of 21,000 crore on the exchequer."

Sources said, if required, the government may also invoke Essential Service Maintenance Act on them.
