Indian Railways' earnings up by 10%

Continuing the trajectory of growth, the Indian Railways have earned Rs 7,292.25 crore (Rs 72.92 billion) in April compared to Rs 6,648.08 crore (Rs 66.48 billion) during the same period last year, registering an increase of 9.69 per cent.

The total goods earnings have also gone up from Rs 4516.18 crore (Rs 45.16 billion) during April 2009 to Rs 4,948.44 crore (Rs 49.48 billion) during April 2010, showing an increase of 9.57 per cent.

The total earnings from passengers during April were Rs 2,066.08 crore (Rs 20.66 billion) compared to Rs 1,853.07 crore (Rs 18.53 billion) during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 11.49 per cent.

The earnings from other sources amounted to Rs 201.93 crore (Rs 2.01 billion) during April as against Rs 196.83 crore (Rs 1.96 billion) during the same period last year, showing an increase of 2.59 per cent.

The total approximate number of passengers booked during April 2010 were 624.63 million compared to 589.96 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 5.88 per cent.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April 2010 were 319.68 million and 304.95 million respectively compared to 301.24 million and 288.72 million during the same period last year, an increase of 6.12 per cent and 5.62 per cent respectively.
