The main runway at the Mumbai airport will remain closed for operations between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day except Sundays till July next year, as the airport authorities are set to undertake the runway reconstruction work from Tuesday.

However, the flight operations at the secondary or cross- runway would continue, a release issued said.

The reconstruction work, which is being carried out in three phases with the prior permission of the DGCA, is a part of the overall effort to upgrade the cross runway system and create an efficient air side infrastructure at the Mumbai airport, it said.

While the first phase of the runway reconstruction work, which commenced on September 23 is expected to be completed by February next, the second phase would start from November 1 and be completed by June 1, the release said.

The third phase of the runway reconstruction work will be taken up from February 1, 2011 and will be over by July 1, the release said. During the reconstruction work, the primary runway will remain closed for operations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, the release said.

Along with work on the primary runway, other associated infrastructure works will also be carried out, it said.
