The Kerala government decided to remove Suzlon Energy's windmills and other establishments from land in the Attappadi tribal area of Palakkad district, saying the company had taken the area illegally.

The "evacuation" will be completed within three months and the land distributed to tribals, a cabinet meeting today in Thiruvananthapuram decided. It also directed legal action against officials of the revenue department in this regard. The decision is based on a detailed report by P Prabhakaran, the chief secretary.

A few months earlier, the district collector was asked to make a preliminary enquiry and based on his report, the government appointed the chief secretary to make a detailed one.

Suzlon said it had only heard about the report and not been questioned before its formulation. "We will review the report before making any further comment. Our company's policy is to always to comply with the law of the land and be sensitive to community issues," it said in a statement.
