23 inches: That's the seating space this airline offers

September 13, 2010 19:02 IST

Next time you complain of cramped seats in train or airline, think twice. If an Italian company has it's way, and low-cost airline opt for it, soon the seats in such planes will have no more than 23 inches between the perch and the seat in front.

As certain airlines -- low-cost Ryanair of Ireland and Spring Airlines of China -- are hoping to get permission to allow passengers to stand also, an Italian company named Aviointeriors, have created the Skyrider.

The seats will offer storage space as well, including a shelf for carry-on bags, and hooks to hang a jacket or purse.

No airlines has opted for such seats yet, but with passengers wanting to pay lower fares, and airlines looking at options to boost revenue, it may not be too late before such seats make their way to airlines.

The seat, as Dominique Menoud, director general of Aviointeriors Group explained, is like a saddle.

If a carrier agrees to install the new seats, Aviointeriors will apply to European aviation authorities and those in the United States for proper certification, Menoud added.

These new seats will be unveiled next week at the Aircraft Interiors Expo Americas conference in Long Beach.
