Apple Chief Steve Jobs may be on medical leave, but he is still closely involved in the company's strategic decisions and is working on the next version of the iPad tablet, said a media report.

The 55-year-old Jobs, who took medical leave about three weeks ago to focus on his health, has been taking business meetings at home and on the phone, the Wall Street Journal quoted people familiar with the matter as saying.

"Among products Jobs continues to work on are the next version of the iPad tablet computer, expected out in the next couple of months, and a new iPhone, expected to be released this summer," the report quoted people in-the-know as saying.

Jobs took medical leave of absence in January this year for an unspecified period.

A pancreatic cancer survivor, Jobs had taken medical leave in 2009 as well, when he had undergone a liver transplant.

Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cooks has been looking after the company's day-to-day operations in Jobs' absence.

"Steve is the CEO of Apple and during his medical leave he'll continue to be involved in major strategic decisions," said an Apple spokeswoman in the report.

Apple has started manufacturing a new version of the iPad, which will be "lighter" and "thinner" than the first model and which includes a front-facing camera.
