Indian mobile handset makers are making strong inroads in the booming cellphone market.
The Rs 50,000 crore (Rs 500 billion) handset market in India has seen new vendors rise to 28 from only five players in January-March 2008 quarter.
The new vendors have garnered 17.5 per cent of the total sales for the first time during the October-December 2009 quarter, according to global IT research firm International Data Corporation.
New vendors had a combined market share of 12.3 per cent out of 2009's overall handset sale of 101.54 million units.
Taking advantage of this opportunity are Indian brands like Spice, Karbonn, Lava, Micromax which have seen their market share rise to 15 per cent, which is projected to rise to 25-30 per cent by the next 3-5 years.
With the government banning Chinese handsets without the 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, the India handset makers are set to establish themselves in one of the fastest growing sectors in India.
With low cost phones and innovative designs, the Indian phones are making their mark in a market dominated by global biggies like Nokia, Motorola, HTC, Sony, etc.

Intex Technologies is a 13-year-old IT hardware, mobile phones and electronics company, headquartered in New Delhi.

Micromax, established in 1991 is one of the leaders in the wireless telecommunication business in India. Micromax promises the latest innovative technologies in mobile handsets.
The company recently launched the cheapest 3G handset, H360, in partnership with state-run MTNL. H360 is available to MTNL customers at a price of Rs 5,500. Micromax has a partnership with BSNL for sale and distribution of 3G data cards to subscribers.
The company plans to open 100 exclusive stores in four metros and Tier-I cities. The company plans to sell six million units this year. Micromax offers basic model to the hi-end models, with prices ranging from Rs 1,600 to Rs 13,000.

Karbonn comes from the UTL group, a telecom group with an annual turnover of Rs 1,600 crore (Rs 16 billion).
Headquartered in Bangalore, the company manufactures landline telephones, electronic exchanges in India and telecom equipment.
The company offers 30 handset models, with a price range of Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000. It has sold 5 million handsets in just one year. It offers touch screen, QWERTY smart-phones and entry-level phones with longer battery life.

Usha Lexus Electronics is a division of General Sales Limited, a company established in 1965, and a part of the Usha Shriram Group.
The company introduced it's range of Lexus mobile phones in the Indian market in 2003 with the objective of providing affordable and reliable handsets. The 20 handsets on offer are priced between Rs 1,300 to Rs 5,000.

Gee Pee Infotech
The Kolkata-based Gee Pee Infotech Pvt Ltd offer 30 handsets. The company is bullish on the mobile business and eyes a revenue of Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion) during 2010-11.
Gee Pee also plans to launch a GSM colour handset at Rs 500 by the end of this month. GeePee Infotech and Xenitis Telecommunications, two companies based in Kolkata, had launched cheapest GSM handsets below Rs 1,000 in 2008.
The company currently sells handsets priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 6,000.

Simoco Telecommunications, a Kolkata-based company will soon launch a handset that supports two GSM connections and one CDMA connection in the same handset priced at Rs 5,500.
Simoco currently sells 12 models priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 6,000. The company offers a variety of over 60 handsets.
The company which has received export orders from service providers like Vodafone for handsets expects to sell 60,000-70,000 handsets per month.

Lava International Ltd forayed into the mobile handset business with a proposed investment of more than Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) over five years, in August 2009.
Lava has entered a mid-priced segment cellphone handset manufacturing segment. Lava which started off with four handsets has 12 handsets now. The handsets are priced from Rs 2,600 to Rs 6,000.

Ray
The MobileStore, the retail chain promoted by the Essar Group unveiled its private label, Ray in May 2009.
The company has launched four handsets with features such as touch screen, dual SIM, Bluetooth with A2DP, MP3 player and FM Radio from Rs 2100 to Rs 7000.
Ray handsets come with a 12-month warranty and unique IMEI numbers.

Spice Mobiles is a part of Spice Televentures, the telecom vertical of the diversified $2 billion Spice Global group India, selling nearly 1.5 million mobile handsets per quarter.
The company with 25 handset models is targeting 1 million handset sales per month from the first quarter of the financial year.
Spice Mobiles has also enhanced its presence outside India with entry into Bangladesh and Nepal, now plans to enter the African market.
In India, Rajasthan, Assam, Haryana continue to be very strong markets for Spice Mobiles where the company ranks second in terms of sales followed by Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra (except Mumbai), Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal.
The handsets are priced from Rs 2,000 to Rs 16,000.

Consumer products giant Videocon offers about 25 handsets, from a basic FM radio mobile phone to a touchscreen smartphone.
Videocon has also launched its mobile telephone services business. The company plans to invest Rs 14,000 crore (Rs 140 billion) in its mobile telecom business in the next three years, and expects to secure 100 million subscribers over the period. The handsets are priced between Rs 1,400-Rs 18,500.
