Ford Endeavour, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Innova, Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Captiva, Toyota Fortuner and yet to be launched Skoda Yeti are some of the options you can consider if you plan to buy something other than a sedan or a hatchback.

But Tata Motors is planning to add one more option to this list by launching Tata Aria by April this year.

Tata is expected to price Aria somewhere between Toyota Innova and Ford Endeavour at Rs 12 lakh (Rs 1.2 million) to 14 lakh (Rs 1.4 million).

Aria facts

Having tasted success with Tata Safari in the SUV (sports utility vehicle) segment, Tata wants to try the MUV (multi utility vehicle) model Aria.

The MUV is designed to behave like a versatile cross-over with features common to premium SUVs. This eight seater luxurious MUV model build on the roadster concept is Tata's device to cement its position in the premium vehicle segment.

Equipped with a 2.2L, DICOR (direct injection common rail) engine (same as Tata Safari) the car guarantees good performance and fuel efficiency. The engine is capable of producing 140bhp of maximum power at 4000rpm with 320Nm of maximum torque at 1700-2700rpm.

Aria is expected to be launched in three variants and all will be available with both 4WD (four wheel drive) and 2WD (two wheel drive option). Tata Aria will be the most luxurious MUV in its segment and it will feature an array of advanced features at a lower price tag.

Appearance

Tata is trying to lure customers not just by power, performance and price but also by Aria's looks.

The leather covered steering wheel, gear shift knob and leather seats, headrest mounted LCD screen, power and tilt steering, power windows at all four doors, automatic climate control AC, keyless entry, advanced CD/MP3 audio system, cup holders on floor console, cigarette lighter and ash-tray in front console, rear wash and wiper, electrical glass demister, digital outside temperature indicator, etc are all proof of the efforts Tata is putting in the overall look of the car.

Even the exterior appearance of the Tata Aria is not so bad. Turn indicators and headlamps are clubbed together in the front. Chrome upper grille is traditionally Tata whereas lower grille with round fog lamps also looks good.

Curves on the bonnet and side combined with opposing wipers at both end and the body colour side view mirror rod look great. Ground clearance is. Not to forget the additional brake light and body colour bumpers. A sun roof might also be there.

Overall

Tata Aria is a stylish looking, powerful, high performance vehicle. It has a unique set of exterior and interior features and provides utmost luxury, comfort and safety. However, the third row has less legroom and the rear is not much impressive. But Tata is known to improve as it goes and Aria is not a bad option if it fits your bill.
