Information technology is an important indicator to gauge a country's economic growth and India is no exception. Therefore, organisations, financial bodies and media houses conduct surveys time and again to arrive at revenue structure of reputed IT companies of India.

The top 20 hardware and software companies had average revenues of $2 billion in 2009-10, according to the latest survey conducted by Dataquest, CyberMedia group journal.

However, the top 20 companies just about managed to match the Indian gross domestic product growth rate of 8.4 per cent in rupee terms to report a combined revenue of Rs180,193 crore ($39.52 billion) in FY '10 compared to Rs 174,605 crore (Rs 1,746.05 billion) in FY '09, according to the survey. All the company revenues are from April 2009 to March 2010.

The revenues do not include their business process outsourcing  revenues. Which is also why Infosys Technologies is not included in the top 20 list compiled by Dataquest.

For companies headquartered in India, Dataquest has taken the entire IT revenue; for companies that do business in India too entire domestic IT revenue has been taken; for non-Indian companies who export out of India, the journal has taken only the revenue generated by the Indian legal entity.

Let's take a look at India's top 20 IT companies in India in terms of revenue.
