It seems that the Indian car buyers prefer the original Germany's 'people's car' more than the original Italian 'people's car'.
Wondering what cars we are refering to?
We are talking about two iconic cars one from Germany and the other from Italy.
Both the cars were once manufactured for the masses but today they are modified and sold at premium prices that could put several luxury sedans to shame.
The cars being talked about here are Volkswagen Beetle and Fiat 500.
Volkswagen Beetle was produced during Hitler's time and become an iconic German car popularly called the Bug.
It met instant success in that period, which is being carried forward even today. The Volkswagen group launched Beetle in India as a part of brand building exercise last year.
The car was received wholeheartedly by the buyers despite its steep price of Rs 20.45 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
The car is imported as a completely built unit and thus the price is so steep. But the car has managed to sell about 284 units since its launch.

Volkswagen Beetle vs Fiat 500
Fiat 500 is a three door model and runs on the same engine as the Fiat Punto. The car is cute to look at and is imported from Turin as a CBU.
But Fiat has only managed to sell about 68 units in the country.
Even though the car is only meant to strengthen Fiat's brand image, the number is pretty low if one compares it to counterpart Volkswagen Beetle.
Volkswagen and Fiat are also competing in the premium hatchback segment with their newly launched cars Fiat Punto and Volkswagen Polo. It seems the competition is going to be as iconic as the car makers themselves!
