India's auto sales go through the roof

Automobile companies have reported the highest ever monthly sales in India. The car sales will rise 12-13 per cent in the ongoing fiscal, almost half of what was achieved in the last financial year, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

SIAM had already predicted that the total sales of cars in domestic market to be 17,14,925 units in 2010-11. In 2009-10, domestic passenger car sales stood at 15,26,259 units as against 12,20,475 units in 2008-09, an increase of over 25 per cent.

Maruti Suzuki sees highest ever monthly sales

The country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India on Wednesday reported its highest ever monthly sales at 1,04,791 units in August, registering 23.56 per cent jump over the year-ago period.

Sales for the same month last year were at 84,808 units, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said in a statement. "This is the highest ever monthly sales recorded by the company," it added.

It was the third time in this fiscal that the company's monthly sales figure has crossed one lakh mark. MSI had reported its highest ever monthly sales at 1,02,175 units in May, the first time when the company had crossed the one lakh units in monthly sales.

The National-Capital-based company also posted its best figure so far for the domestic market at 92,674 units in August, a 32.47 per cent increase from 69,961 units in August 2009.

MSI's exports in last month, however, declined by 18.39 per cent to 12,117 units from 14,847 units in the year-ago period, the company added.

The sales of the company's once bread-and-butter model M800 also declined 29.81 per cent to 1,919 units compared to 2,734 units in August 2009, the statement said.

The A2 segment (comprising Alto, WagonR, Estilo, Swift, A-Star and Ritz) witnessed 25.69 per cent growth at 65,953 units compared to 52,473 units in the same month a year ago.

A3 segment sales (consisting of SX4 and DZiRE) increased by 33.99 per cent to 10,479 units compared to 7,821 units in the corresponding period a year ago, the company said.

MSI's total passenger car sales rose 32.86 per cent to 92,508 in August as against 69,629 units in the same month in 2009, it added.

General Motors sales up 34%

General Motors India has registered an impressive growth of 34% in sales in August 2010, compared to the corresponding period last year. It sold 7941 units in August 2010 against 5939 units in August 2009.

The August 2010 sales comprised 2481 units of the Chevrolet Spark, 2475 units of Chevrolet Beat, 1438 units of the Chevrolet Tavera, 724 units of the Chevrolet Cruze, 325 Units of Chevrolet Aveo, 240 units of Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, 176 units of the Chevrolet Captiva and 82 units of Chevrolet Optra.

The increase in the sales was primarily driven by the response to Chevrolet Beat, Cruze and Spark. Chevrolet Beat and Chevrolet Cruze have become the industry benchmarks in their respective segments and a winner among consumers in India, with their best-in-class design, performance and other product attributes.

Ford India sales triple

Ford India tripled sales in August. It sold 7,925 vehicles this month, a 220 percent increase compared to August 2009.

The Ford Figo remains at the top of the sales charts with more than 34,000 bookings recorded in the 25 weeks since it was introduced.

Ford has sold 54,676 vehicles in India so far this year, a 195 percent increase compared to January - August in 2009.

As well as its domestic success, the Figo is also in demand overseas. Following the first shipment of India-built Figos to South Africa in May, the hot-selling compact car will be exported to 50 new markets including Mexico, North Africa and the Middle East from next year.

TVS Motor sales at a record high

Chennai-based TVS Motor Company on Thursday reported its highest ever monthly sales at 1,70,735 units in August, registering a 33.52 per cent jump over the same month last year.

The company had posted a total sales of 1,27,875 units in the corresponding month of 2009, TVS Motor Company said in a statement.

TVS Motor's two-wheeler sales in last month witnessed a 31.75 per cent increase at 1,67,109 units compared to 1,26,842 units in the same month last year, it added.

Motorcycle sales of the company during the last month rose by 30.21 per cent to 66,574 units from 51,127 units in the year-ago period, it said. The domestic two-wheeler sales in August 2010 stood at 1,48,081 units, up 28.66 per cent over 1,15,095 units in the same month in 2009.

The company said its exports of two-wheelers during the month rose by 61.98 per cent at 19,028 units as against 11,747 units in August 2009. Total three-wheeler sales also soared by over three-fold to 3,626 units in last month from 1,033 units in the same month of 2009, the statement said.

Micra boosts Nissan's sales

Nissan Motor on Wednesday announced that it has registered total sales of 1249 units for the month of August 2010 as against 22 units in August 2009.

Out of the 1249 units, the sales of the new Nissan Micra were 1182 units in Aug 2010 as against 928 units sold in July 2010.

Out of the remaining, Nissan Teana, the luxury sedan (CBU) clocked 21 units in Aug 2010 as against 10 units in Aug 2009 and Nissan X-trail; the lifestyle SUV (CBU) registered sales of 44 units as against 12 units in Aug 2009.

Nissan also sold 2 units of its iconic sports car, Nissan 370Z in Aug 2010. So far, the company has already sold 4 units of 370Z since its launch in January this year.

Yamaha Motor sales up 30%

Two-wheeler maker India Yamaha Motor on Thursday reported a 29.76 per cent increase in total sales at 30,450 units in August.

The company had sold 23,466 units in the same month last year, India Yamaha Motor said in a statement. The domestic sales rose by 16.22 per cent to 22,672 units in August 2010 from 19,508 units in the same month last year, it added.

During last month, the company exported 7,778 units as against 3,958 units in the year-ago period, a jump of 96.51 per cent. "The Indian two-wheeler market is gaining momentum and Yamaha is gaining firm ground with strong presence across all the segments," India Yamaha Motor Chief Executive Officer and MD Yukimine Tsuji said.

The company is optimistic that its recent launches such as of SZ, SZ-X and YBR 125, will contribute to its growing sales numbers, he added. "We will continue our focus on the strong marketing initiatives to further bolster our traction in the rural market too," Tsuji said.

Hyundai sales jump 17%

Hyundai Motor India, on Wednesday reported a jump of 17.21 per cent at 28,601 units in its domestic sales for August 2010. The company had sold 24,401 units in the domestic market in August 2009, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) said in a statement.

The company's total sales increased by 2.25 per cent at 50,636 units against 49,521 units in the year-ago period. Exports of the company, however, fell by 12.28 per cent to 22,035 units from 25,120 units in the year-ago period, the statement said.

"The domestic demand continues to be strong and we have constraints in production due to some components supply... We expect the demand in the domestic market to be even stronger in the coming festival season," HMIL Director (Marketing and Sales) Arvind Saxena said.

The company is changing its "production mix" to meet this increased demand in the domestic market, he said without giving details. In its A2 segment (Santro, i10 and i20), the company sold 45,804 units, while in the A3 segment (Accent and Verna) sales were at 4,806 units.

The A5 segment (Sonata Transform) of HMIL witnessed sales of 26 units, while its SUV Tucson received no buyer during the month.

Tata Motors sales rise 32%

Tata Motors on Wednesday reported a 32.38 per cent increase in its total sales during August at 65,938 units compared to 49,810 units in the same month in 2009.

The homegrown firm's total passenger vehicles sales in the domestic market stood at 25,196 units in August against 17,364 units in the same month last year, a jump of 45.10 per cent, the company said in a statement.

The company's exports in the last month grew by 92.14 per cent to 5,157 units compared to 2,684 units in the same month last year, it added. 'Indica' reported sales of 7,531 units, down 22 per cent over August 2009, Tata Motors said.

'Indigo' family recorded sales of 6,678 units, a rise of 151 per cent over the same month last year. Sales of 'Sumo' and 'Safari' increased by 11 per cent to 2,884 units.

In the commercial vehicles segment, the company sold 35,585 units in the domestic market during the month compared with 29,762 units sold in the same month last year.

Light commercial vehicles sales during the month were at 20,734 units, a growth of 11 per cent over the last year, while medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales stood at 14,851 units, a growth of 34 per cent compared with August, 2009.

M&M auto sales up 29%

Automaker Mahindra & Mahindra on Wednesday reported an increase of 28.96 per cent in its total sales for August at 28,903 units.

The company had sold 22,413 units in the corresponding month of 2009, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) said in a statement.

In the domestic market, sales of the company jumped by 27.39 per cent last month at 27,275 units as against 21,410 units in the same month last year, it added.

The total sales of M&M utility vehicles, including Scorpio, Xylo, Bolero and Pick-Ups, stood at 12,994 units as against sales of 11,443 units in August 2009, up 13.55 per cent.

Sales of the Logan sedan from Mahindra Renault Pvt Ltd went up by 70.79 per cent to 801 units during the month, compared to 469 units in the same month a year ago.

The company said sales of three-wheelers and Gio and Maxximo mini-trucks during August jumped by 38.94 per cent to 5,074 units from 3,652 units during the same month last year.

Light commercial vehicle sales from Mahindra Navistar Automotives Ltd during the month stood at 873 units against 658 units in the same month a year ago, a jump of 32.67 per cent. M&M's exports during the month jumped 88.06 per cent to 1,228 units as against 653 units during August 2009.

Czech luxury car-maker Skoda Auto reported a 24 per cent growth in vehicle sales to 1,511 units in August. "I am extremely delighted with Skoda Auto's continuing growth as we gear up for the exciting period ahead.

To further propel Skoda's success in the Indian market, we will soon introduce Skoda's first SUV, 'Yeti'," SkodaAuto India Board Member (Sales and Marketing) Thomas Kuehl said. The company currently sells three models in India -- Superb, Laura and Fabia.
