Companies spend billions of dollars on building brands as it gives a strategic direction and competitive advantage. And trust becomes a key factor in creating a successful brand. So which brands are the most trusted in India?
The Economic Times Brand Equity Survey 2010 has released the 'Most Trusted Brands Survey 2010'. The survey identifies brands that bond with consumers.
Nokia tops the chart as the most trusted brand in India, followed by Colgate and Lux. The survey considered the brand's quality of service, value for money, popularity, confidence and repurchase intent, etc.

The airline been ranked 28th among the top 50 service brands, ahead of leading banks, insurance companies, food-chains and airlines. Recently, Air India was presented the Reader's Digest Trusted Brand Gold Award also for the fifth consecutive year.
Air India was founded by J R D Tata in July 1932 as Tata Airlines. Today, India's largest airline is a part of the Indian government-owned National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL). Air India operates across 115 destinations, including 52 international ones across the USA, Europe, Canada, the Far-East and south-east Asia and the Gulf.

Kingfisher operates more than 375 daily flights to 71 destinations, with regional and long-haul international services. Kingfisher Airlines is one of six airlines in the world to have a 5-star rating from Skytrax.
It also won the 'Best Airline in India and Central Asia', 'Best Economy Class Seats' and 'Staff Service Excellence award for airlines in India and Central Asia' in World Airline Awards, 2010.

3. Jet Airways
Jet Airways which started operations in 1993, operates a fleet of 90 aircraft. It operates over 400 flights daily to 67 destinations worldwide.
Jet Airways and JetLite also continue to be the largest passenger airline group with a market share of 26.6 per cent.
The airline carried 7.82 lakh domestic revenue passengers in July 2010, while the seat factor for the airline's domestic operations also stood at 73.8 per cent. Best First-Class Service in the World award at Business Traveller's 20th annual 'Best in Business Travel' awards.

4. IndiGo
An InterGlobe Enterprises company, IndiGo has grown as one of India's fastest growing budget airline. IndiGo has flown over 21 million passengers in four years.
The airline currently enjoys 15.7 per cent of the market share. It has bagged the Skytrax World Airline Award for being the best low cost airline of India & Central Asia at the World Airline Awards and Travel Agents Association of India's (TAAI) 'Best domestic low cost service airline' award in 2010.

SpiceJet, a low-cost airline based in Chennai, started services in May 2005. Today, it is the second-largest budget airline in terms of market share. Kalanithi Maran recently acquired a majority stake in the airline.
SpiceJet was voted as the best low-cost airline in South Asia and Central Asia region by Skytrax in 2007. SpiceJet flies to 20 destinations across India.

It commenced operations in 1994 when its predecessor Hutchison Telecom acquired the cellular license for Mumbai.The company now has operations across Indian with over 100 million customers. Vodafone is the world's leading international mobile communications group with about 333 million proportionate customers as on 31 December 2009.

The government owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd was established in October, 2000. It offers a comprehensive range of telecom services in India: Wireline, CDMA mobile, GSM mobile, Internet and broadband services.
BSNL holds the fourth position with respect to total wireless subscriber base of 62.86 million and the market share of BSNL in wireless is 11.97 per cent. In basic services, BSNL is miles ahead of its rivals, with 35.1 million basic phone subscribers.

Tata Teleservices spearheads the Tata Group's presence in the telecom sector. Incorporated in 1996, Tata Teleservices is the pioneer of the CDMA 1x technology platform in India.
After it acquired Hughes Telecom, it was renamed Tata Teleservices in 2002. It launched mobile operations in January 2005 under the brand name Tata Indicom and has a pan-India presence operating in 22 telecom circles.
The company's network has been rated as the 'Least Congested' in India for five consecutive quarters by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India through independent surveys.

4. Bharti Airtel
Bharti Airtel, one of Asia's leading integrated telecom services providers with operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa.
Bharti Airtel offers GSM mobile services in all the 23-telecom circles of India and is the largest mobile service provider in the country, based on the number of customers. Bharti Airtel has more than 186 million customers.

5. Tata Docomo
Tata Teleservices now also has a presence in the GSM space, through its joint venture with NTT Docomo of Japan, and offers products and services under the Tata Docomo brand name.
Tata Docomo has received a pan-India license to operate GSM telecom services and has also been allotted spectrum in 18 telecom circles. The company plans to launch pan-India operations by the end of FY 2010-11.

Maruti Suzuki India, a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan, is India's largest passenger car company, accounting for over 50 per cent of the domestic car market.
It has 13 brands and over 150 variants ranging from Maruti 800 to hatchback Ritz, A star, Swift, DZire, SX4 sedan and luxury SUV Grand Vitara.
Maruti Suzuki reported its highest ever monthly sales at 1,04,791 units in August, registering 23.56 per cent jump over the year-ago period. Auto major Maruti Suzuki has also topped the JD Power customer satisfaction survey for newly launched cars.

Through subsidiaries and associate companies, Tata Motors has operations in the UK, South Korea, Thailand and Spain. Among them is Jaguar Land Rover, the business comprising the two iconic British brands.
It also has an industrial joint venture with Fiat in India. Tata Motors' total sales (including exports) of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles in August 2010 were 65,938 vehicles, a growth of 32 per cent over 49,810 vehicles sold in August 2009.

Honda Siel Cars was incorporated in December 1995 as a joint venture between Honda Motor Co, Japan and Siel Limited, a Siddharth Shriram Group company to launch the latest passenger in India.
Honda Siel saw a rise in sales in August since its inception in 1998. The company sold 5,532 units in August 2010 as against 3,987 units sold in August 2009 marking an impressive growth of 38.75 per cent.
The company's best-selling model Honda City sold an impressive 4,259 units in August 2010. The company's product range includes Honda Jazz, Honda City, Honda Civic and Honda Accord which are produced at the Greater Noida facility.

From being a manufacturer of army vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra has grown to become a major automobile and tractor manufacturer.
It has plants in China, United Kingdom, and has three assembly plants in the USA. M&M has partnerships with international companies like Renault SA, France and International Truck and Engine Corporation, USA.
M&M made its entry into the passenger car segment with the Logan in April 2007 under the Mahindra Renault joint venture. M&M recently acquired 55.2 per cent stake in Reva, adding passenger cars to its electric vehicle portfolio.

Established on October 6, 1997, the joint venture between Kirloskar Group and Toyota Motor Corporation, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited (TKM) has established a stronghold in the Indian market with over 10 models.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor has registered a growth of 26 per cent in sales in August 2010 compared to the same period last year. It sold 6361 units in August 2010 against 5045 units in August last year.
