Check out India's 13 super expressways

India has roads stretching across 3.314 million kilometres, making it the third largest road network in the world.

Expressways and highways have made road transportation much faster and efficient in India. The 13 expressways in India cover a distance of 683.36 kilometres. Fifteen new expressways are under construction.

A massive project is underway to expand the highway network and the government plans to add an additional 18,637 kilometres of expressways to the network by 2022.

Here's a look at India's 13 expressways...

Ahmedabad Vadodara Expressway
Distance: 95 km

The Ahmedabad Vadodara Expressway also known as National Expressway 1 connects Ahmedabad and Baroda in Gujarat.

The expressway reduces the travel time between the two cities from about 2.5 hours on National Highway 8 (NH 8) to about an hour now.

Opened in 2004, this expressway has 2 lanes on each side and one service lane. It is a part of the Golden Quadrilateral Project by NHAI.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway
Distance: 93 km

The Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway is India's first six-lane concrete, high-speed, access controlled tolled expressway.

Connecting Mumbai with Pune, the expressway has reduced the travel time to two hours.

Jaipur-Kishangarh Expressway
Distance: 90 km

Inaugurated in May 2005, the Jaipur-Kishangarh Expressway connects Jaipur with Kishangarh.

Allahabad Bypass
Distance: 86 km

Allahabad Bypass is an access controlled highway and forms a part of Golden Quadrilateral project, connecting four metropolitan cities New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai in India.

Durgapur Expressway
Distance: 65 km

The National Highway 2 commonly referred as Delhi-Kolkata Road is a busy highway that runs through the states of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.

It forms a major part of historical Grand Trunk Road along with NH 91 and NH 1 in India.

Ambala Chandigarh Expressway
Distance: 35 km

Ambala Chandigarh Expressway is four-lane 35 km long, high-traffic density corridor of Ambala-Chandigarh section.

It was completed in 30 months at a cost of Rs 298 crore ($66.45 million). The expressway has been operational since December 2009.

Chennai Bypass
Distance: 32 km

The Chennai Bypass is a full-access controlled expressway that interconnects four radial Indian National Highways around Chennai, India covering a distance of 32 km.

It was built at a cost of Rs 405 crore (Rs 4.05 billion).

Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway
Distance: 28 km

The Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway connects Delhi and Gurgaon, an important satellite city of Haryana.

The expressway, a part of the Golden Quadrilateral project improves the road connectivity between four metropolitan cities with 4-6 lane highways.

The $223 million expressway was inaugurated in January 2008.

Noida-Greater Noida Expressway
Distance: 24.53 km

The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway is a six-lane highway connecting Noida in Uttar to Greater Noida.

It was built at a cost of Rs 400 crore (Rs 4 billion).

Delhi Noida Direct Flyway
Distance: 23.55 km

DND Flyway is an eight-laned access controlled tolled expressway which connects Delhi to Noida, an industrial suburb area.

It was built by The Noida Toll Bridge Company.

Hyderabad elevated expressway
Distance: 11.6 km

An elevated expressway connecting the Hyderabad International Airport with the city at Mehdipatnam was opened in 2009.

The entry of cyclists, two and three-wheelers, three and four-wheeled seven seaters and pushcarts are prohibited on the flyover.

Hosur Road Elevated Expressway
Distance: 9.98 km

The Bangalore Elevated Tollway in Karnataka is a part of the BETL (Bangalore Elevated Tollways Ltd), project.

Inaugurated in 2006, it is the tallest flyover in Bangalore.

Kona Expressway
Distance: 8 km

The National Highway 117 (NH 117) runs in West Bengal. The north-western terminal is in Kona, near Nibra town in Howrah district.

The Highway connects the cities Howrah, Kolkata, Diamond Harbour, Kulpi and Bakkhali with NH 2 and NH 6.

The Kona Expressway connects Kolkata to NH2 and is part of Golden Quadrangle project.
