With India witnessing massive economic growth, there is a feeling that the gap between the rich and the poor is getting increasingly bigger.

While it is true that the rich are getting richer, is the problem of income inequality any better in India compared to other countries, such as the United States?

Let us have a look at 22 selected countries and see how India performs when it comes to income inequality.

The degree of income inequality in India can be compared to that in other countries on the basis of the Gini coefficient, a mathematical ratio that allows economists to put all countries on a scale with values that range (hypothetically) from zero (everyone in the country has the same income) to 100 (one person in the country has all the income).

The countries are ranked out of 134 nations, as the rest of the countries are either very small and/or very poor.
