Cars in India: The top 10 gainers

With 13.11 per cent growth in sales, the month of February brought cheers to the automakers in India.

With total sales of 2, 11,402 cars, compared to 1, 86,890 notched up in the same month last year (Source: Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), February 2012 witnessed the highest growth in the last 10 months in terms of sales output.

Note: The slideshow is on month-on-month growth percentage, and NOT on who sold the largest number of cars.

Rank 10: Tata Safari

This Tata SUV sold 1,711 units in February, compared to 1,392 units sold in January. Experts feel it may be because of the jam-packed bookings of Mahindra XUV500 or the delay in the launch of the New Safari Storme.

MoM growth: 23%.

Rank 9: Hyundai Accent

Hyundai Accent, which seems to be a forgotten hero these days, sold 580 units in February against January's 463 units.

This sedan does well as it has petrol-CNG fuel option at a tempting price.

MoM growth: 25%.

Rank 8: Toyota Corolla

Following the market trend of launching Automatic Transmission (AT) variant Toyota presented an affordable AT version, which is doing remarkably well.

The premium sedan's sales rose to 996 against 785 of January 2012.

MoM growth: 27%.

Rank 7: Tata Venture

The compact looking spacious van from Tata Motors was able to pick up a quite good percentage compared to last month, after some decent promotions and publicity stunts along with promising television commercials, which helped it surpass the sales of rival Maruti Eeco.

It sold 1102 units in February compared to 798 in January.

MoM growth: 38%.

Hyundai Eon logged sales of more than 10,000 units, for the first time, since its launch in October last year.

On month on month basis it has given a tough competition to arch rival Maruti Alto

Eon sold 10,480 units in February compared to 7,344 of January

Here again 'change' has worked for Toyota as face lifted Fortuner, which was unveiled at Auto Expo 2012, has increased its individual sales  -- 1,346 units (in February) in contrast to January's 941.

It provides tough rivalry to Ford Endeavor and Chevrolet Captiva.

MoM growth: 43%.

The much-awaited 2012 Xylo with its new mHawk diesel motor has been a favorite among the tour operators and also private car owners.

Rank 1: Honda City

The apex spot goes to New Honda City. Since its initial launch a decade back this flagship Honda sedan has constantly been doing excellent work in the entry level premium sedan category in India.

Honda presented New City with Automatic Transmission (AT) in the affordable entry level 'Corporate' variant.

This move towards 'change' got a three-fold increase in sales compared to January.

Mere 1,503 units were sold in January, while 6,052 units were sold in February 2012.

MoM growth: 303%.
