Industrialists and companies featured on postage stamps

Recently, President Pranab Mukherjee released commemorative stamp on the prominent industrialist Aditya Vikram Birla. The stamp celebrates Birla's achievements in globalisation of India.

India Post issues these special stamps, akin to limited edition products, to recognise the work done by people in various fields, celebrate special events, and so on.

Produced only for collection purposes and for philately, one can buy these either at philatelic bureaus and special counters designated to sell these.

Here are some of the prominent businesspersons and organisations India Post has featured on their stamps.

Kamlapat Singhania

He catalysed a tidal wave of industrial regeneration and social engineering in pre-independent North India with JK Organisation. To rival imports from Manchester, he set up JK Cotton Spinning & Weaving Mills Co. Ltd. Many other businesses followed that helped India to become self-reliant.

Lakshmipat Singhania

Date: November 15, 2010

Son of Kamlapat Singhania, he with his brothers Padampat Singhania and Kailashpat Singhania expanded the business in a big way. They were pioneers in setting up a mini steel plant in 1924, and the first Indian Jute Mill in Uttar Pradesh in 1929.

Apollo Hospitals

Started by Dr Prathap C Reddy in 1983 as a 150-bed hospital, it now has 8,500 beds across 50 hospitals. India Post honoured the healthcare company for its commitment to healthcare.

Krishna Kumar Birla

Date: March 13, 2009

Apart from being a prominent industrialist, he has also served as Member of the Rajya Sabha and was an educationist. Some of his businesses include textiles, chemicals, fertiliser, sugar, and media. He was the second son of Ghanshyam Das Birla.

Harakh Chand Nahata

Date: February 28, 2009

His family was one of the oldest traders and distributors in north-east and Kolkata. Nahata emerged as a leading social leader and philanthropist, associated with more than 60 socio-religious organisations. He was also the first person to start road transportation in the difficult and inhabitable terrain of Tripura that helped in two way traffic and boost economic development in the area.

R M Alagappa Chettiar

Launched his career by pioneering textile business in the country, he rapidly expanded and diversified. He had rubber plantations in Malaysia, tin mines in Burma, insurance companies in Kolkata, hotels in Mumbai, theatres in Chennai and a private airline. Even British recognised his business acumen and he was knighted in 1946 at the age of 37. He took the lead in responding to government's call asking industrialists to help educate India, and set up string of institutions that laid the foundation of the Alagappa University.

Manoharbhai Patel

Father of Praful Patel, he was a hugely successful businessperson and philanthropist, who started string of educational institutes in and around Gondia. At the beginning of his career, he joined his uncle in bidi trading and quickly set up a factory for forward integration of the business. After that he started expanding and never had to look back.

Godrej Centenary

Date: July, 11, 1998

When a young man named Ardeshir Godrej gave up law and turned to lock making in the year 1897, a legend in the field of Indian industry was born. The word "Godrej" etched into the metal of his Anchor Brand locks became a symbol of self- reliance in the years that followed. He also made a scientific discovery by making soaps from vegetable oil instead of animal tallow. These stamps were released to commemorate the centenary of the Godrej industrial group. It features Ardeshir and Phirojsha Godrej, against the backdrop of graphics depicting science, technology and entrepreneurship.

Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata

Date: November 29, 1994

J R D Tata stood out as one of the great personalities of India in the twentieth century. Born in Paris in 1904 he was appointed the chairman of Tata Sons Ltd at the age of 34 . With his charismatic and forward-looking leadership, Tata, in a career spanning well over half a century, not only led the Tata Group to new heights of achievement but also set standards for Indian industry as a whole.

Ghanshyam Das Birla

Date: June 11, 1984

Well known for his role in the freedom movement, he started life as a trader. After setting up his first jute mill, he expanded into cement, chemicals, rayon, and steel tubes. He was dedicated educationist and founded at Pilani the Birla Education Trust and Birla Institute of Technology and Science. He was offered knighthood, which he declined.

Laxmanrao Kashinath Kirloskar

Date: June 20, 1969

Founder of Kirloskar group, he started his life as a school teacher and later on opened a cycle repair shop in Belgaum. From this modest beginning, he went on to revolutionised Indian agriculture by introducing iron ploughs in place of traditional wooden ploughs.

Ardaseer Cursetjee Wadia

Date: May 27, 1969

He had the unique honour of being the first in many fields. He was the first Indian who was elected a fellow of the Royal Society; he was the first to introduce lighting by gas in Bombay; and he was the first to build an ocean going steam vessel in India. India Post released the stamps to recognise his innovations and contribution to the country.

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata

Date: January 7, 1965

He was honoured with the stamps as recognition of his services in the industrialisation of the country. He joined his father's trading firm in 1858 and had an outstandingly successful business career during which he made a massive contribution to the country's industrial development. He set up cotton mills in Mumbai and Nagpur and founded the Tata Iron & Steel Company, which is among the largest integrated steel mills in the world.
