Honda's latest stint in the Indian market, Amaze, has given it ability to leapfrog and grab the third position in the Indian car market.

When fuel prices in the Indian market started going high, Honda India fans waited to see diesel motor under the hoods of their favourite models.

The Japanese auto major took a long time to bring in an oil burner. In the meanwhile people speculated that every model the company was about to introduce, will be diesel-powered.

The wish was fulfilled in April 2013 when Honda introduced the Brio based sedan, christened Amaze.

This entry-level sedan was launched against the segment ruler Maruti Swift Dzire and therefore, was rendered with the much-awaited first diesel motor of the company in the Indian car market.

Honda Amaze did not just set the sales figures soaring high, but also managed to claim Tata Motors position of the third largest passenger car seller in India.

Honda has sold 58,977 vehicles in the April-September slot and in the month of April, the company has achieved sales of 10,354 units, which sums up to a 88 per cent hike when compared with the sales figure of September 2012.

This is quite an achievement by the company but can it keep the momentum going? Apparently, the Japanese auto major is all set with new arsenal for its Indian portfolio.

There are about four to five models, refreshed as well as brand new vehicles, which are slotted to be introduced in the Indian market.

Honda will also be taking advantage of the gestation period before Tata Motors introduces any new vehicle in the market to strengthen and take a lead against rivals.

The Japanese auto major now has the technology to develop oil burners but then the Amaze diesel engine was not suitable for the requirements of the City sedan and that explains the gap before the launch.

Just like the City sedan, the next generation of Honda Jazz is scheduled for launch in the foreign markets at around 2013 end; its entry in India will be around 2014 and it will also be rendered with a diesel engine.

Honda is likely to put in the 1.5-litre i-DTEC powertrain in the diesel version of City but as explained earlier, the company needs to change the engine tunes to make it compatible with the City sedan.

Therefore, some alterations are expected in addition to the engine getting more fine-tuned.
