Lankans put demands
before signing
Sri Lanka's cricketers say they will sign an International Cricket Council contract
governing sponsorships of major tournaments if the sport's world body agrees to two demands.
The players want a 30 per cent share of money the ICC pays
the Sri Lankan cricket authority, the Sri Lankan Cricket
Board, for the team's participation in next month's Champions
Trophy tournament and the 2003 World Cup, said association
spokesman Graeme Labrooy.
The players are also demanding that ICC consult with them
before match sponsorship deals are agreed to, Labrooy said.
Under the new ICC contract, players are barred from
having personal sponsorship deals with companies if the world
body has arranged deals with rival firms.
At one stage, players from England, Australia, India and
South Africa were all refusing to sign contracts. However, in
the past few weeks, all have since indicated they will agree
to it. The Indian team remains the only one still outright
refusing to sign.
Sri Lankan cricket board chief executive Anura Tennakoon
is scheduled to leave today for the West Indies where he will
meet ICC officials and present the players' demands.
Sri Lanka will be hosting the 12-nation ICC Champions
Trophy tournament, beginning on September 12.
