I think he was instrumental in infusing self-belief into SA cricketers of the 1990s. After Barry Richards, the Pollock brothers and Mike Proctor, South Africa needed a role model to come out of the 20-year international "blackout" in the real sense, that is, psychologically. Cronje was that model. His on-field behaviour was also exemplary. It's unfortunate he took money but, vitally, he confessed, unlike Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Nayan Mongia and others who I'm sure played a far dirtier role in giving cricket a bad name than Cronje could ever have hoped to. Also, Cronje never took money to throw away a game but to provide information about the wicket etc. Mark Waugh and Shane Warne have done the same. Why are they regarded as heroes then and Cronje is said to be the man who tainted cricket?
