India vs West Indies - Third Test, day 3

Mohandas Menon

  • Shivnarine Chanderpaul recorded his sixth Test hundred of his career in his 61st Test match. Interestingly, it was his first three-figure knock outside the Caribbean. His previous highest away score was 95, he had made against Pakistan at Rawalpindi way back in November 1997.

  • Chanderpaul's hundred was his fifth against India in 14 Tests. Though former West Indians Gary Sobers and Viv Richards have eight hundreds each - the most by any batsman against India in Tests, Chanderpaul now joins teammate Carl Hooper with most hundreds - five - against India - among contemporary batsmen.

  • Chanderpaul (136 not out) while on 114 became the fourth batsman after Indians: Rahul Dravid (1209 runs) & Sachin Tendulkar (1116 runs) and Englishman: Michael Vaughan (1031), to aggregate of 1000 runs during this calendar of 2002. Chanderpaul, now has 1022 runs in 12 matches in 2002.

  • Chanderpaul meanwhile, became the fifth West Indian batsman to aggregate 1000-plus runs in a calendar year. Gary Sobers (1193 runs in 1958), Viv Richards (a record 1710 runs in 1976), Gordon Greenidge (1149 runs in 1984) and Brain Lara (1222 runs in 1995 & 1151 runs in 2001) are the others to do so.

  • Marlon Samuels (89 not out) playing in his 13th match registered the highest Test score of his career. His previous highest was the unbeaten 60 he made against Australia at Melbourne in December 2000, which incidentally came in his only second Test match (and third innings) of his career.

  • The unbeaten 89 by Samuels was the highest individual score made at this venue by a number seven batsman obliterating the 75 by India's Farokh Engineer against England in 1972-73.

  • The Chanderpaul-Samuels partnership of 191 (unbeaten) was the best ever by any team for the sixth wicket at the Eden Gardens. The previous best was the unbeaten 160, which was also achieved by two West Indians Gary Sobers and Joe Solomon in January 1959.

  • This was only the second time in his career that Harbhajan Singh (52-15-101-3) was delivering over 50 overs in an innings. He had figures of 53.3-6-185-2 against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Ground at in September last year.
