India vs West Indies - Third Test, day 5

The 214 run partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman was India's best against the West Indies for the 5th wicket bettering the previous best of 204 between Sunil Gavaskar and Brijesh Patel at Port of Spain way back in March 1976. The partnership was also the best for the 5th wicket against the West Indies in an away Test match. The previous best was also a 204 run stand between Australians Mark Waugh and Allan Border at Melbourne in December 1992.

Tendulkar's 176 just failed to better his personal best against the West Indies, which was the 179 at Nagpur in 1994. He was also deprived of bettering the best by an Indian batsman against the Windies at the Eden Gardens, which still remains as the 182 (unbeaten) by Sunil Gavaskar in January 1979.

Tendulkar's 176 was his 12th score exceeding 150 runs, he equals Gavaskar's tally of 12 such scores. Now only Australians Don Bradman and Steve Waugh have more 150-plus scores in Tests - 18 and 13 - respectively.

Tendulkar has now pushed his aggregate to 1292 runs for this calendar year in 14 matches. This is by far his most productive year in terms of runs. His previous best year came in 1999 when he scored 1088 runs in 10 matches.

Javagal Srinath (21, when on 12) became the 47th Indian batsman to aggregate of 1000 runs in Tests. It was his 67th Test and 92nd innings. This incidentally, was the longest taken by any Indian batsman to reach this landmark. Previously, teammate Anil Kumble needed 56 matches and 71 innings to reach his 1000 runs in 1999.

Srinath also became the 380th batsman in Test cricket history to reach 1000 career runs. Only West Indian Curtly Ambrose has taken more matches (69) and innings (99) to do so (in 1997) than Srinath.

Srinath, meanwhile became the 5th Indian to do the all-rounder's double of 1000-plus runs and 100-plus wickets. He also became the 39th all-rounder to do this double in Tests. By doing so in his 67th Test, Srinath became the third slowest in Test cricket to achieve this after West Indians Carl Hooper (90th match in 2001) and Ambrose (69th match in 1997).

Srinath also became the third Indian after Kapil Dev (131 Tests, 5248 runs, 434 wickets) and Anil Kumble (76 matches, 1388 runs, 349 wickets) to do the double of 1000 runs and 200 wickets. He became the 17th all-rounder in Tests to do so. Srinath now has 1009 runs and 236 wickets in 67 Tests.

This was the West Indies' only third drawn match in the last 30 away Test matches since November 1997. Their overall record is a pathetic two victories, 25 losses and 3 drawn affairs in the last 30 Test matches. The Windies' only two drawn matches in the last five years away from home came against England at Manchester in August 2000 and against Zimbabwe at Harare in July 2001.
